Although we are all aware of how creative and how much "busy" work Hedgie's can do and be, the hurricane in a cage is a first for me! As most of you are aware, I put fleece blankets in my cages 3/4 length of the pen and last quarter is layered with a small blanket to absorb some of the exercise wheel noise, and training puppy pads to catch any of the feces and urine from the hoglets while they are exercising on their wheels (that don't always make it to the litter box).
On Monday evening when I came to do the nightly rounds of the feeding for everyone, I have to admit my first reaction to what I was looking at shocked me entirely LOL. The very neat and tidy pen I left for all of the hedgie's were still neat for two of the adults but Bristol's cage was a shambles. I kind of did a double take, you know the kind when you can't possibly have seen what you saw so you shake your head and refocus! LOL. Which is exactly what I did. The exercise wheel had been dragged out on an angle into about the middle of the cage, the blanket to absorb the noise from the wheel was construed across its bars and into the inside wheel part (still not sure how she did that one). The training pads (layered) that were in place for the messy parts of the nightly exercise runs were gone, the blanket covering the balance of the pen was gone, the litter box was beside the wheel in the middle and the sleeping bag was stuffed in the door of the igloo itself (ok you can stop laughing now--just kidding read on). I rubbed my eyes in disbelief of the scene in front of me and opened the cage door. I put back the blanket for the wheel, placed two new layers of training pads on top and replaced the exercise wheel on top of that. I pulled the sleeping bag out of the igloo door and started to hunt for all the missing items, I shook out the litter in the sleeping bag and began to sweep the cage bottom of litter (using mini brush) and captured most of the strune litter into a dust pan and placed it back into the litter box. So I lifted the igloo up slightly to see what I could see (and sneaking a peek at the babies), to see that the training pads and missing blanket were all stuffed inside the igloo along with the pups, the toys and the tissue roll toy to boot! At this point I just started to laugh at the creative decor Bristol has decided to have for her cage. When I finally stopped laughing at "Hurricane Bristol", all was put back in place and everyone received their nightly round of treats and food! Tuesday evening, only part of "Hurricane Bristol" was apparent so equally as funny, but not so many things to replace in their original order. "Go Bristol"!
